What does a 24 H Blood Pressure Monitor do?
A 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor records, during your daily activities, all the blood pressure readings to help me assess whether you suffer from high blood pressure.
The most important recording, guiding me in the above diagnosis is the average blood pressure reading throughout the 24-hours.
How is a 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitor Performed?
In order to undergo a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor we need to fit a cuff into your arm. The cuff will inflate every half an hour, taking blood pressure readings. Usually patients tolerate this test very well.
At the end of all the measurements, a computer will generate the average blood pressure readings and will compare them to the normal blood pressure levels in healthy individuals.
We will provide you with your blood pressure monitor results within 24 hours.
A 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor is essential to initiate the appropriate treatment to help prevent a heart attack or stroke. These complications are both due to high blood pressure.
High Blood Pressure Causes
The majority of high blood pressures are idiopathic, which means that 90% of them have no clear cause.
However, the majority has a hereditary component. Therefore, if your parents or siblings have high blood pressure, then it is more than likely you can have high blood pressure, too.
Some wrong lifestyle choices such as stress or high salt intake can cause high blood pressure. Sometimes, it can be due to other causes such as hormonal problems like a pheochromocytoma, Crohn’s disease, a contraceptive pill or blockages of the renal arteries.
When Should I have a 24 H Blood Pressure Monitor?
Symptoms like headache, dizziness, shortness of breath should prompt you to have your blood pressure checked.
This test will allow me to assess whether you suffer from high blood pressure and to risk stratify you in the mild, moderate or high blood pressure category and to tailor the medication dose and types according to that classification.
In addition to detecting high blood pressure, the 24-hour blood pressure monitor can help me assess the anti-hypertensive efficacy of the drugs you are currently taking.
